How to read this table
- Regular rate: the annual rate the account pays with no special conditions. This is the number that matters over the long term.
- Promotion: a higher rate, limited in time and often reserved for new clients or new deposits. The exact conditions are on the institution’s page.
- Insurance: CDIC for member banks and trust companies, AMF for Desjardins and Quebec caisses. An account with a broker or a neobank may be covered through a partner bank: we say so when that is the case.
- Source: the link to the official page where we recorded the rate, on the date shown.
Our methodology
- What we compare: high-interest savings accounts open to individuals living in Canada, with no banking-package requirement. GICs, term deposits and ETFs are not included.
- Where we find rates: only on each institution’s official page, never on another comparison site. The link is in the Source column.
- When we check them: every week, and the same day when an institution announces a change. A rate we have not been able to check for more than 14 days is shown in grey.
- How we rank: by regular rate, from highest to lowest. When rates are equal, the order is alphabetical. Whether or how much an institution pays us never affects the ranking.
- Who we include: every Canadian institution whose account meets our criteria, whether it pays us or not.
- What we don’t do: we don’t accept deposits, we don’t recommend an account based on your personal situation, and we don’t accept money to change a ranking.
Before you open an account
- Check the rate on the institution’s website. It may have changed since our last check.
- Read the promotion’s conditions. Some only apply to new deposits, or require a minimum deposit.
- Look at the rate after the promotion. A low regular rate can cancel out the benefit of a short promotion.
- Check deposit insurance. Above $100,000 at the same institution and in the same category, part of your money is no longer covered.
